Course Objectives

At the conclusion of this course, students will have a better understanding of how a business operates in our modern political, social and economic environment. Specifically, students will:

  1. Describe basic environments (legal, social, economic) in which a business operates,
  2. Understand the fundamentals of business,
  3. Understand how business ethics apply to customers and other stakeholders in the business environment,
  4. Understand the basic forms of business ownership and the role of the entrepreneur,
  5. Explain basic concepts of management, the skills required of managers and recognize problems faced in operating a business enterprise,
  6. Understand the basic concepts of operations management and quality,
  7. Explain basic concepts of Human Resource Management and Labor Relations,
  8. Describe basic concepts related to consumer behavior and the marketing processes of goods and services with emphasis on the role these play in business,
  9. Provide basic information with respect to developing and pricing products,
  10. Explain basic elements of distributing and promoting products,
  11. Discuss the various kinds of information technology, their functions, and the benefits and risks associated with each and their particular importance for businesses.

Teaching and Learning Methods

The methods include lecturing (which may involve power point presentation, video and audio aids), tutorials, student presentations, projects and class discussions.
